In AI in the Classroom, I explain how teachers can use AI, especially ChatGPT, to make teaching more efficient, personalized, and student-centered. I argue that AI should not replace teachers, but should help with repetitive tasks like planning, drafting, grading support, assessment creation, and data analysis so teachers can spend more time working directly with students.
A major idea in the book is that AI changes writing instruction. Since students can now use AI to generate polished essays, I believe teachers should focus more on discussion, verbal explanation, debate, oral defense, and process-based writing. If students can explain their thinking out loud, their understanding becomes more visible and authentic.
I introduce the WISSAM model, which stands for Whole-language Instruction Supported by Standards, AI, and Metrics. Through this model, I use student data to identify skill gaps, create targeted lessons, align instruction to standards, and monitor growth. I also show how AI can help teachers design curriculum, personalize assessments, provide feedback, and adapt instruction for diverse learners.
A large part of the book focuses on special education. I explain how teachers can anonymize IEP data and use ChatGPT to create accommodation guides, student snapshot charts, lesson adaptations, and IEP review tools. These AI-generated supports help teachers plan more effectively, but they should never replace professional judgment or full IEP review.
I also discuss digital transcription tools, which allow teachers to record discussions, analyze classroom talk, support student writing, and reflect on their own teaching. Finally, I address academic dishonesty by arguing that AI misuse is best prevented through better assignment design, clearer policies, oral defenses, formative checkpoints, and assessments that make student thinking visible.
Overall, my message is that AI can make teaching more humane when used wisely. It saves time, improves personalization, and allows teachers to focus on connection, discussion, accessibility, and authentic learning.
