I built SkillsTeacher.AI as a skills-based teaching and learning system. It is as both a supplement and workaround to the traditional school system. It is designed for you to upload something real—an assignment, reading, student work sample, question, professional problem, or real-life challenge—and it helps identify the skills involved and connects you to resources for learning or teaching them.

It is really a combination of all of those pieces working together. It combines a structured Skills Library, AI tools that help analyze work and situations, teaching assistants that help create or adapt materials, and a learning library with courses and resources; the goal is one connected process from problem → skill → instruction → practice → new evidence.

ChatGPT can often give you a useful answer, but that can also make it easy to offload the thinking: ask the question, get the answer, and move on without actually building the skill yourself. SkillsTeacher.AI is designed to work differently. Instead of simply telling you what to do, it looks at the task, work sample, or situation, identifies the skills involved, shows what may need to be learned first, and connects you to explanations, practice, and resources so you can build the ability to do it yourself.
ChatGPT can give you a useful answer, but SkillsTeacher.AI is built around a structured set of defined skills and connected learning resources. My goal is not just to answer your question, but to help you understand what skill is involved and what to do next—whether that means an explanation, lesson, scaffold, tutoring resource, practice activity, or assessment.

The AI tools are built around specialized roles with the skills for that role built in. For example, the Grade-Level Team Gateway works like having an experienced grade-level team ready to look at your problem and help identify the skills involved—you bring the situation, and the system helps figure out what knowledge and skills matter.
The Gateway tools are built around archetypal expert teams. A Grade-Level Team Gateway, for example, brings together the kinds of skill bases an ideal grade-level team might draw on—academic subjects, literacy, writing, executive functioning, access, and other relevant areas. Instead of becoming better at asking AI for answers, the goal is to help the learner become better at actually doing the work.

NASR stands for Needs-Aligned Skills Retrieval. It is the method used to look at the meaning and demands of a task, work sample, text, or situation and ask, “What skills does this person or task actually require?”
NASR helps retrieve a limited set of relevant skills, separate what is clearly visible from what is only possible, check for earlier prerequisite skills, and connect the user to learning resources where they are available. You do not have to know the technical name of the skill before asking for help—the system helps you find it.

Underlying skills are the smaller abilities hiding inside a larger task or problem. A student struggling with chemistry, for example, might understand the chemistry idea but be having trouble with unit conversion, reading directions, organizing several steps, or explaining the reasoning clearly. By identifying the smaller skill underneath the struggle, you can focus instruction where it is actually needed instead of reteaching the whole subject or labeling someone as “bad at” it.

Prerequisite skills are the building blocks that usually come before a more advanced skill. If someone is struggling with a difficult task, the best next move may not be more practice with the difficult task—it may be strengthening one of the earlier skills that task depends on.
For example, a complex chemistry problem may depend on understanding moles, converting units, reading ratios, and organizing multistep calculations. Finding that earlier missing foundation can stop the frustrating cycle of giving someone more advanced practice when the real problem is underneath it.

It starts with the evidence that is actually there. The system looks at the task or situation, breaks it into visible parts—such as steps, claims, calculations, decisions, errors, omissions, or actions—and then retrieves a limited set of skills that appear meaningfully related.
It also separates different kinds of findings. A skill may be required by the assignment, clearly demonstrated, partly demonstrated, connected to an observable error, not visible at all, or only a possible prerequisite. That gives you something more useful than “the student is struggling”: you can see what the work actually shows, what it does not show, and what may be worth checking next.

The Skills Library covers thousands of source skill entries across academic, professional, family, and everyday-life areas. These are often very specific skills—not just broad subjects like “math” or “communication.” For example, a learner might work on using context clues, identifying a main idea, organizing an argument, converting units, interpreting ratios, supporting a claim with evidence, estimating travel time, managing a schedule, asking for clarification, actively listening, de-escalating a conflict, communicating with families, giving effective feedback, or explaining a budget decision clearly.
Once you find the skill you need, the goal is to give you different ways to learn or teach it. Depending on what has been developed for that skill, that may include clear explanations, teacher guides, tutoring dialogues, examples, videos, slideshows, infographics, audio, practice, rubrics, and assessments. Instead of searching the internet for something vaguely related to your problem, you can get much more specific: find the skill behind the problem, learn it, practice it, and use it.

Yes. As a special education teacher, I never wanted learning to stop at academics or at graduation. I wanted students and families to be able to think about the whole person and the whole life ahead—including character and personal qualities, communication, decision-making, executive functioning, relationships, career readiness, independence, and practical daily-living skills like budgeting, shopping, transportation, personal care, making appointments, and asking for help.
The larger idea is to help people map out the skills they may need for the life they want to live. Whether someone is preparing to leave school, start a job, live more independently, become a parent, or simply handle a new challenge, they can identify the skills involved, learn them one at a time, practice them, and keep building throughout life.

Yes. In fact, I designed SkillsTeacher.AI to be used in two different ways. You can use it as a standalone system to identify and directly teach individual skills, or you can use its resources and workflows on top of the texts, assignments, assessments, and curriculum you already use.
As a teacher, I know that we often cannot—and may not want to—replace an adopted curriculum. A principal, school, or district may require certain texts and assignments, and individual teachers also have materials they know and trust. SkillsTeacher.AI is meant to strengthen those materials by making the underlying and prerequisite skills visible. Instead of leaving teachers to guess why an assignment is difficult—or allowing important skills to remain hidden, untaught, or overlooked—you can examine the actual assignment and see the skills students may need to successfully complete it.
From there, you can teach the identified skills directly or use the specialized assistants to support the original material. The Text Scaffolder and Leveler can add or adjust supports, the Text Engineer can turn a reading into a structured teaching sequence, the Auto Annotator can add close-reading guidance, and the Lesson, Unit, and Assessment Generators can build instruction around the same skills. The goal is not to replace good curriculum or lower its quality—it is to add a skills layer that helps more students successfully reach it.

You can do both, but I really designed SkillsTeacher.AI around learning skills as you need them in real life. You can certainly work through a subject, topic, or sequence of skills like a traditional course, but you do not have to start by choosing a curriculum and working through it from beginning to end.
Instead, you can bring in the actual situation, assignment, document, question, or problem you are dealing with right now. The system can help uncover the skills involved, connect you to the relevant learning resources, and help you work through the situation while building those skills. That is the larger idea behind SkillsTeacher.AI: learn the skills you need, when you need them, through the real problems and situations where you actually need to use them.

You can absolutely use ChatGPT on its own, and it can be very helpful. A blank chatbot has broad general knowledge, but it is not automatically working from my organized skill collections, skill definitions, prerequisite relationships, evidence rules, and connected learning resources. SkillsTeacher.AI is built around those structures so it can look at a real problem and connect it to a more specific set of skills and next steps. I built SkillsTeacher.AI because I wanted something more structured: instead of starting with a blank chat and asking AI to solve the problem for you, the system starts with the work, situation, or document in front of you, helps identify the skills involved, and then connects you to learning resources for those skills.
The goal is not simply to get an answer faster. It is to help you understand what you need to learn, build the skill, and become more capable of doing the work yourself—so AI supports your growth instead of replacing the thinking and learning you need to develop.
That means you do not have to hope the chatbot happens to give you the right framing; the system is meant to give the AI a more disciplined set of skill references to work from.

For a beginner, the simplest way to think about it is: ChatGPT can answer a question; NASR helps figure out what you may actually need to learn.

Because a big list of information is not the same thing as an organized learning system. The structured skill system gives the AI defined skills, relationships, prerequisites, common errors, evidence rules, and learning resources to work from instead of relying only on broad general knowledge.
That makes the system more useful when you are stuck. Instead of getting a long list of vaguely related ideas, you have a better chance of finding the small number of skills that actually matter and the learning materials connected to them.

Because you can create a beautiful lesson around the wrong problem. If a student is struggling with a chemistry problem because of unit conversion, generating another lesson on the larger chemistry concept may not fix anything.
I designed the system to ask “What skill does the evidence point to?” before asking “What should we teach?” The company materials identify this as one of the strongest differences in the model: skill identification comes before content generation.
That helps teachers spend less time reteaching broadly and more time addressing the actual building block that may be getting in the way.

Once a skill has been identified, I do not want the user to be left with a label and a search box. The system is designed to connect that skill to resources that may include explanations, examples, tutoring dialogues, teacher guidance, videos, slides, infographics, practice, rubrics, and assessments.
That means you can move much faster from “I think this is the skill” to “Here is how I can learn it, teach it, practice it, and check it.” It also reduces the need to generate everything from scratch every time.

A blank chatbot puts a lot of responsibility on you. You have to know what to ask, what information to include, whether the answer makes sense, what tool to use next, and how to turn the response into actual learning.
I designed SkillsTeacher.AI to be more problem-first. You can start with something simple like “I have student work,” “this text is too hard,” “I need a lesson,” or “I do not know where to start,” and the workflow helps guide you toward the relevant skills, supports, instruction, and assessment.
For teachers, parents, students, and professionals who are already busy or unsure where to begin, that structure can reduce guesswork and make AI feel less like a blank box and more like a guided path from the problem to the skills needed to handle it.
Practical Use FAQs

What do I upload first?
Yes. You can upload common files such as PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoints, spreadsheets, screenshots, photos, scanned worksheets, assignments, readings, rubrics, and work samples.
If you do not want to upload a file, you can simply paste the reading, assignment, question, directions, or other text into the tool.
You can describe a school, family, workplace, leadership, or real-life situation in your own words. The system can then help identify the skills that may be involved and suggest useful learning next steps.
You can use your phone, too. Take a picture of a worksheet, handwritten work, or even something around you—a plant, the sky, or an object—and ask the system to help explain what it sees and the subjects or skills that may be involved. Images can be misinterpreted, so always review the result.
For audio or video, use a transcript unless the particular interface says it accepts those files directly. The more relevant information you provide, the more specific the analysis can be.
Most importantly, keep uploads anonymous. Remove student names and other unnecessary identifying information. A good rule is: upload the work, not the identity.

No. That is one of the main reasons the Gateway tools exist. You can start with the work or problem, and the system helps narrow it down to the skills that appear most relevant.

No. You should not need to learn complicated prompts. In fact, if you upload a document, there is no need to prompt at all. Just press enter and it will automatically analyze the upload for skills.

Yes. Once the relevant skill or need becomes clearer, you can move into the next step that makes sense—such as opening a skill resource, creating a tutoring dialogue, annotation, scaffold, lesson, unit, or assessment. The larger workflow is designed to move from the problem to the skill and then into actual teaching, learning, or practice.

Yes—and I expect you to. AI output should be treated as a starting point that you review, change, shorten, expand, or reject based on your students, family, classroom, or situation.
For teachers especially, nothing should automatically go straight from AI to a student. You remain the person who reviews the material and decides what is appropriate to use.
The simplest way to start is: Bring something real → explain what you need → review the skills or support suggested → choose what you want to use next.
Tech and Platform FAQ

What AI platforms does SkillsTeacher.AI use?
Some parts of SkillsTeacher.AI currently use AI tools available through ChatGPT and Claude. Depending on the Gateway or virtual assistant you are using, you may therefore be directed to OpenAI or Anthropic’s platform and may need an account with that provider.
I do not currently use Google Gemini for these workflows because, in my experience building and testing the system, I need the AI to return the exact learning-resource links I have provided. Gemini has instead sometimes routed links through Google search rather than returning the actual destination I intended, which does not work well for the direct skill-to-resource experience I am trying to provide.
The important point is that SkillsTeacher.AI is not the underlying AI company. OpenAI and Anthropic provide AI technology; I provide the organized skills, curricula, resources, specialized instructions, workflows, and teaching approach that give those models their purpose inside SkillsTeacher.AI. I also do not want the system permanently dependent on any single AI provider.

Which parts of SkillsTeacher.AI use ChatGPT or Claude?
The Gateways and specialized virtual assistants are the AI-powered parts of the system. They can help analyze an assignment, document, image, work sample, or situation; identify relevant skills; and help you move into resources for teaching or learning those skills.
I use both ChatGPT and Claude as AI platforms for parts of this experience. They provide the underlying AI; SkillsTeacher.AI provides the specialized skill collections, resources, instructions, workflows, and educational methodology that give the AI its purpose.

I need the Gateways to connect people as directly as possible to the specific learning resources associated with a skill. In my testing, Google Gemini has sometimes routed provided links through Google search rather than giving users the actual destination link I intended.
For that reason, I do not currently use Gemini for these workflows. This is a practical product decision based on how I need SkillsTeacher.AI's skill-to-resource routing to work, not a claim that Gemini is generally an inferior AI model.

Thinkific is the learning and course-delivery side of the current system. It is where SkillsTeacher.AI can organize courses and learning materials such as skill explanations, teacher guidance, presentations, videos, infographics, podcasts, tutoring scripts, practice, rubrics, and other resources.
A simple way to understand the difference is: the AI helps you find or work with the skill; Thinkific helps deliver the learning resources for it.

Sometimes, yes. The current system connects SkillsTeacher.AI with outside platforms that do different jobs, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Thinkific.
I want to be transparent about that. The current experience is a connected system built across several platforms rather than one completely self-contained application.

Absolutely. I actually encourage people not to spend unnecessary time talking to chatbots.
If you know the skill, go directly to the learning resources. If you do need AI analysis, my preference is simple: upload or describe the problem, get the skill analysis, find what you need, and move on.
I would rather you spend your time learning, teaching, discussing, practicing, and applying the skill than sitting in front of an AI.

I want people to be able to see how SkillsTeacher.AI works before paying for it, so there are free ways to explore parts of the system and understand the approach.
Because the available free resources and offers can change as the platform develops, the current website should be the source for exactly what is included at any given time.

Paid membership provides broader access to the available SkillsTeacher.AI learning system, courses, skill resources, and other included materials.
The goal is to keep individual access affordable for teachers, learners, parents, and professionals, rather than making useful educational resources available only when an institution purchases them.

No—and that is intentional.
I want teachers to be able to decide for themselves whether SkillsTeacher.AI helps them. I do not want it turned into another district mandate, compliance requirement, or program teachers have to use because somebody is checking a box.
Teachers can access the system individually because I want adoption to come from usefulness and teacher choice.

Yes. Although I do not want mandatory district adoption, I am very open to voluntary school and district pilots.
For qualifying schools or districts, we are willing to explore pilots at little or almost no cost so educators can try the system in real settings, provide feedback, and help us study what works and what needs improvement.

Yes. I can work with individual teachers, departments, schools, universities, publishers, nonprofits, educational organizations, and other groups on custom Skills Libraries, curricula, resources, workflows, or related projects. Custom curriculum and licensing are both contemplated in the company materials.
You do not need to know exactly how to build it. Tell me what you want and email me. We can discuss the need and put together the appropriate team to work on it.

Potentially, yes. Licensing particular curricula, skill collections, professional-learning materials, or other parts of the system is one of the possible business directions identified in the company materials.
Because licensing needs can be very different, organizations should contact us and describe what they want to use and how they intend to use it.

Because I am not charging you simply for access to an AI model.
General-purpose AI can already generate worksheets, quizzes, summaries, explanations, and lessons. The value I am building is the organized skills system, underlying and prerequisite skill analysis, curricula, teaching methodology, specialized instructions, tutoring resources, multimedia learning materials, workflows, and connections from real problems to specific learning resources.
The AI is one part of the delivery mechanism. The skills and the learning system are the product.
Current Limitations and Soft-Launch Quality

Yes. I want to be transparent about where the platform is today. We have created a very large library—more than 80,000 files across different formats—and although the materials have gone through human review, I fully expect that a few small mistakes will still surface during this soft-opening period.
Most of the issues we have seen are visual or cosmetic, especially in infographics and other generated images. You may occasionally see something like text being partly covered by an image, a small smudge, a misplaced character, or a letter that looks like another letter. In almost every case, the underlying instructional content is still clear and usable, but these are exactly the kinds of things we want to keep cleaning up.

We took great care to reduce factual hallucinations in the instructional materials. The process was designed to use structured skill content, detailed prompts and workflows, and human review rather than simply asking AI to freely invent educational material. Even so, with tens of thousands of files, I do not want to pretend that every sentence, image, example, or answer is guaranteed to be perfect. The larger platform has not yet undergone independent validation, so users should continue to review important materials before using them.

Math was one of the hardest areas to produce because generative AI is still unreliable when it tries to create mathematical visuals, symbols, equations, and diagrams directly. For that reason, we used a more controlled, agentic process to develop the math skills, scripts, and infographics, and the math materials are often especially detailed because we wanted the reasoning and steps to be explicit.
That extra care improves the material, but it does not mean every visual will be flawless. We expect the first few months of launch to help us find any stray formatting, notation, or image issues that escaped review.

Please tell us. If you notice a typo, blocked text, odd symbol, questionable example, broken resource, or anything else that does not look right, take a screenshot and send it to us.
We are a small teacher-built company, not a company with an enormous publishing budget, so this soft-opening period is also a chance for early users to help us make the library better. If you spot something we missed, we want to know about it, fix it, and improve the resource for everyone who comes after you.
The system's broader collections include areas such as executive functioning, communication, decision-making, self-advocacy, personal care, shopping and money, career awareness, job readiness, daily living, transportation-related planning, and other transition and independence skills.
Instead of leaving a family with the enormous goal “become more independent,” the idea is to break that future into smaller skills that can actually be learned: identify the skill → understand the steps → teach or model it → practice it in real life → gradually reduce help → see whether the person can use it more independently.

No. I would rather students build skills than build relationships with chatbots.
Whenever possible, I designed the Gateway experience to be simple and low-prompt: upload something, receive the analysis, find the skills and resources you need, and move on. Students certainly can use the learning resources independently, but the goal is not endless AI conversation.
I think of AI as the bridge to learning, not the place where the learner should live.

That is what I want it to do. My original classroom use of AI was about moving time away from background preparation and toward discussion, conferencing, oral explanation, feedback, teaching, and relationships.
If AI helps me prepare an annotated text, identify a missing skill, create a tutoring script, or differentiate tomorrow's material more quickly, I can spend the actual class period working with students instead of making them interact with software.

Because this started in my classroom, not in a technology company looking for an education problem.
I am a special education teacher. I built the early versions because I had real students in front of me—including students working far below grade level—while still having grade-level and advanced curriculum I was responsible for teaching. I needed practical ways to identify skills, pre-teach concepts, scaffold difficult texts, differentiate support, assess understanding, and help students make progress. The company materials trace SkillsTeacher.AI directly from that classroom work and the original Skills Reference Library into the larger system today.
That classroom problem remains the test I care about: Does this actually help someone teach or learn?

No. It certainly can help create instructional materials, but generation is not the main idea.
A normal AI tool can make another worksheet. SkillsTeacher.AI is designed to ask first: What skills does this assignment require? What does the learner's work actually show? What prerequisite skill may matter? What should be learned or taught next?
Then it connects that skill to learning resources and tools for teaching, scaffolding, practicing, and assessing it. The company's own analysis identifies this connection between evidence → skills → instruction → new evidence as a central distinction.

I believe it can, if we use it differently.
I do not want people spending twenty minutes chatting with AI when the useful part could take two minutes. Upload, analyze, find the skill, get the resource, and leave.
Print the tutoring script. Print the annotated reading. Have the class discuss it. Practice the skill on paper. Listen to the podcast in the car. Try the life skill in the community. The technology should help prepare people for activity in the real world, not become a substitute for it.

This is extremely important to me. The goal is not “AI, complete this task.” It is “What skills do I need to complete this task myself?”
SkillsTeacher.AI is designed to move people from a real problem toward skill acquisition. If you cannot organize an argument, understand ratios, manage a schedule, handle a difficult conversation, or teach a particular concept, I would rather help you learn the underlying skills than simply have AI perform the task for you.

Then do not use the technology.
A conversation may be better. A book may be better. A printed tutoring script may be better. Manipulatives may be better. Going outside may be better. Practicing the actual life skill may be better.
SkillsTeacher.AI is not based on the idea that every educational problem needs a technological solution. The technology should help you identify, prepare, or access what you need—and then get out of the way.
Teaching and learning quality

YI did not build SkillsTeacher.AI to simply make everything easier. The goal is to make difficult material more accessible without automatically lowering the learning goal. A student can still work with the same important text, concept, or assignment, while getting the support needed to reach it.
That support might mean adding context, vocabulary help, annotations, clearer directions, visual supports, or step-by-step guidance. In many cases, I would rather help a student reach a strong text than replace it with something less meaningful. A student can still work with grade-level, honors, AP, or other advanced material while receiving supports such as background knowledge, vocabulary help, annotations, chunking, guiding questions, or different response options.

Teachers can use the virtual assistants to add context, background knowledge, annotations, vocabulary, definitions, translated support, scaffolds, and different levels of assistance to the same text. One student may receive a fully supported version, another may receive partial support, and another may use the original text, with those supports gradually reduced as the learner becomes more independent.
Yes. I learned very quickly in the classroom that sometimes a student is struggling with a reading because they simply do not have the background knowledge the text assumes they already know.

The Skills Library provides the actual skill instruction, while the specialized assistants help teachers apply that skill to their own texts, lessons, units, and assessments. Students can use the learning resources themselves, and parents can also use the same explanations and guidance to better understand and reinforce what the learner is working on at home.

This is one of the biggest reasons I want learners to have direct access. A teacher or professor may know their subject extremely well, but one explanation will not work for every learner.
SkillsTeacher.AI can give you another way in. Depending on the skill, you may have simpler or deeper explanations, tutoring dialogues, examples, videos, slideshows, infographics, audio, practice, or other resources. You are no longer limited to understanding something through one person's explanation or one format.

You can bring in the actual assignment, reading, question, or other material you were given. But I did not build SkillsTeacher.AI around “Give me the answer.”
I want it to help you ask: “What do I need to know and be able to do to answer this myself?” The system can identify the skills inside the assignment and connect you to resources for learning them. That is intentionally different from using AI to simply complete your schoolwork.

Yes. Sometimes today's difficult assignment depends on something you were expected to learn months or even years ago.
The system can help identify background knowledge, underlying skills, and possible prerequisite skills that may be getting in your way. Then, instead of being told only that your answer is wrong, you can go to the relevant skill resources and work on that building block before trying the harder problem again.

I built SkillsTeacher.AI specifically so teachers do not have to throw out the curriculum, books, articles, assignments, or routines they already use. You can bring in the material you are already teaching and use the system to uncover the skills inside it, add supports, build instruction, or connect students to direct skill learning.
That makes it much more practical for real schools, where teachers often have required curricula and cannot simply replace everything. You can use SkillsTeacher.AI as a full skills-based learning system, or simply as an extra layer that strengthens what you are already doing.

The system was designed around real classroom urgency: “I have a text,” “I need a lesson,” “this material is too hard,” or “I do not know where to start.” You can begin with the actual assignment or reading you plan to use and build support around it rather than stopping everything to adopt a separate program.

I built SkillsTeacher.AI to help schools make the skills inside teaching and learning more visible. A principal may see a school full of good teachers using strong materials, but still have students who struggle because important prerequisite skills are hidden inside assignments, texts, and assessments. SkillsTeacher.AI is designed to help surface those skills and connect them to instruction without requiring the school to throw out its existing curriculum.
That is important because most schools cannot simply replace adopted programs every time a new tool appears. The system is meant to sit on top of what teachers already use—their texts, lessons, assignments, assessments, and school curriculum—and add skill analysis, scaffolding, direct instruction, and assessment support where needed.
It may also reduce some of the tool sprawl teachers experience by connecting several common tasks—skill identification, text support, lesson building, unit planning, and assessment—within one larger workflow. I would not claim yet that it replaces an entire EdTech stack in practice, because that still needs to be tested in real schools, but that is one of the intended advantages of the design.

I would not measure success by logins or how many AI outputs teachers generate. I would look at whether the system is actually helping teachers make better instructional decisions and whether those decisions help students.
A pilot could collect things such as time spent planning before and after, whether teachers accepted or changed the skill recommendations, whether the system routed to the correct resource, whether teachers actually used the suggested material, and what new student work showed afterward. The company materials specifically recommend measuring teacher effort, recommendation use, skill-to-course accuracy, human corrections, and improvement in later work.
That is also why I would rather begin with a focused pilot than make large claims before the evidence exists.

The technology itself should not require complicated AI training. Staff should be able to begin with a real problem—such as a difficult text, student work, an instructional need, or a professional situation—and follow the system from there.
The more important training is about using AI responsibly and thoughtfully: protecting private information, understanding that AI can make mistakes, separating what the evidence actually shows from what the AI is only suggesting, reviewing recommendations before using them, and knowing when human professional judgment needs to take over.
I also hold Webinar Wednesdays, where I explain SkillsTeacher.AI live over Zoom, demonstrate how the different parts of the system work, walk through real examples, and answer questions directly. I want people to have access to an actual person—not just instructions on a website—especially when they are learning the system or have questions about using AI responsibly.
My goal is to make getting started simple: learn the basic safeguards, see the system used in practice, try it yourself, and know that you can ask questions along the way.

No. At this time, I am intentionally not limiting SkillsTeacher.AI to district purchasing or district-wide adoption. As a teacher, I do not want it to become another required program, compliance exercise, or piece of software teachers are forced to use. I want educators to choose it because they see practical value in identifying the skills underneath student work, teaching missing foundations, and helping students make real academic progress.
I also believe educational technology should not be siloed around the teacher or the school. A child learns with the help of many people—teachers, parents, specialists, counselors, paraprofessionals, school leaders, tutors, and others—and those adults are learners too. That is why SkillsTeacher.AI includes academic skills alongside teaching, parenting, leadership, communication, executive-functioning, transition, daily-living, and other skill areas, with the larger goal of giving the people around a learner access to a shared language of skills and learning.
That is also why I want SkillsTeacher.AI to remain publicly accessible to individuals, including teachers, students and other learners, parents who want to learn and teach alongside their children, and school professionals who want to strengthen their own skills. Rather than putting the system behind a district wall, my goal is to keep access affordable for most individual users, with membership revenue helping us continue researching, reviewing, improving, and building additional skill sets and learning resources.

You can start with the homework itself. Upload or paste the assignment and ask the system to explain what the assignment is asking your child to do and which skills are needed to do it. For example, what looks like one writing assignment may actually require understanding the reading, choosing evidence, organizing an argument, explaining evidence, and revising.
From there, you can open the resources for the relevant skill, learn what it means yourself, and use examples, questions, practice, or tutoring-style explanations with your child. The goal is not for you to give your child the answer—it is to help both of you understand what your child is actually supposed to be learning.

That is completely fine. I designed this so parents do not have to be teachers or subject experts. You can start with the actual assignment, reading, directions, or other material your child received and use the system to help make it understandable.
One of the most useful resources for this is the Tutoring Script, along with the Tutoring Script Virtual Assistant. It can take difficult material and scaffold it into a tutoring-style conversation using simpler vocabulary and clearer explanations, so the parent and child can work through the ideas together. The larger system specifically uses Socratic tutoring dialogues as one of several ways to teach the same underlying skill.
I designed this for what I think of as kitchen-table tutoring: a parent or other layperson should be able to sit down with a child, open the material, and work through it without needing a teaching degree or deep knowledge of the subject. A learner can also use the tutoring-style resources independently when appropriate. Instead of thinking, “I don't remember algebra, so I can't help,” you can say, “Let's understand this together, figure out the skills involved, and work through them one step at a time.”

No. I did not build it to diagnose children, determine disabilities, replace an IEP team, or substitute for qualified professionals.
The system can examine the evidence you provide and identify skills that may be worth teaching or investigating. It should distinguish “I can see this in the work” from “this may be contributing to the problem.”
As a parent, use that information to ask better questions and find useful instruction—not to label your child. If something raises a larger concern, bring the evidence and questions to the teacher or appropriate professional.

This is one of the groups I specifically had in mind when thinking about the larger system. The materials identify relevant areas for autistic learners and their families including executive functioning, communication, daily living, shopping and money, personal care, career awareness, job readiness, decision-making, self-advocacy, academic learning, and parent education.
A parent can begin with the real situation, rather than a broad label like autism. For example:
“Getting ready for school is very difficult.”
Instead of treating that as one giant problem, you can begin looking at the smaller skills involved—following a sequence, organizing belongings, managing time, recognizing when help is needed, communicating that need, or completing parts of a routine more independently. You can then focus on one teachable skill, use an appropriate explanation or practice resource, practice it in the actual routine, and see what happens.
Or you might begin with:
“My teenager is approaching adulthood and I don't know what we should be working on.”
You can think through the actual life ahead: transportation, shopping, money, personal care, appointments, workplace communication, asking for help, safety, time management, living with others, community participation, and self-advocacy. The system is meant to help turn “independence” from a vague future goal into specific skills that families can begin teaching and practicing now.
The purpose is to give autistic learners and the people supporting them more ways to learn useful academic, communication, self-advocacy, daily-living, and independence skills while respecting the individual. Each skill also has a firm framework or “system,” to it, including interpersonal skills, which my students appreciate very much and provide a way for their curiosity to blossom.

Yes, but I want to be clear about what I mean by parenting skills. I am not here to tell anyone how to raise their child or promote a particular parenting philosophy. I am approaching parenting from my perspective as a teacher: What can a parent understand, learn, or do that may help support their child’s education, development, and growing independence?
That is also why I do not see parenting, academics, and life skills as separate things. As students move through high school and toward adulthood—especially students receiving special education and transition services—families often become an important part of practicing skills outside of school. Skills such as budgeting, transportation planning, making appointments, personal care, communication, self-advocacy, organization, career readiness, decision-making, and independent living eventually have to work in real life, not just in a classroom. The company materials specifically connect parents and transition-age learners with these kinds of practical skills.
The same is true academically. A parent may want to understand how to support a struggling reader, help a child organize schoolwork, reinforce a skill at home, or understand how to support a gifted child who needs greater challenge in one area but still needs help in another. The larger system is designed so parents can understand and use the same underlying skill language as learners and educators rather than being separated from the educational process.
So when you see areas such as parenting, raising gifted learners, academics, executive functioning, transition, and life skills, they are meant to work together. I am offering skills, explanations, and ideas as a basis for learning and discussion. You decide what makes sense for your child and your family. My role is much narrower: as a teacher, I want to give parents practical educational knowledge and skills that may help them help their children succeed in school, prepare for adulthood, and become more independent.

Yes. Reading is one of the areas from which the larger system originally grew. The materials describe foundational literacy and reading skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, morphology, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, context clues, and more advanced analysis.
A teacher can examine a reading problem, narrow it to a more specific skill, teach that skill directly, provide practice, and then look at new evidence rather than simply telling the student to “read more.”

Yes. SkillsTeacher.AI includes materials for gifted and advanced learners, including resources specifically focused on raising and supporting gifted children. The larger Skills Library is designed to span a very wide range—from foundational Pre-K and early-learning skills through advanced secondary and college-connected material—so a learner does not have to stop simply because they are working beyond their expected grade level.
This is especially useful for twice-exceptional learners, because development does not always happen evenly. A student might be extraordinarily advanced in science or reading while still needing support with writing, organization, executive functioning, communication, or another foundational skill. The system can help a learner move ahead where they are ready while strengthening the areas that still need support, rather than forcing everything to stay at one grade level.
The goal is ultimately very simple: meet learners where they actually are and help them keep growing—whether that means going back to strengthen a basic building block or moving far ahead into advanced learning.

No. In fact, I designed it to work almost the opposite way. Most digital products want you to stay, click, chat, and keep interacting. I want you to get what you need and go do something with it. The larger philosophy behind the system is to use AI for background work and return people to teaching, discussion, reading, practice, relationships, and real-world application.
Whenever possible, I designed the Gateway experience to be one-shot and low-prompt. Upload the assignment, text, anonymized work sample, or document and let the system analyze what is there. If you do not have a document, describe the situation simply. You can ask follow-up questions when they are genuinely useful, but you should not need a long conversation with a chatbot just to find the skills or resources you need.
I prefer this approach for another reason: prompts and incomplete context can influence AI responses, and AI can still make mistakes. The more complicated the interaction becomes, the more important it is to review what the system is assuming. SkillsTeacher.AI is therefore designed to give the AI a structured starting point and move you toward the Skills Library rather than encouraging endless conversation. The company materials similarly emphasize evidence, structured skills, limited inference, and human review rather than treating chatbot output as unquestionable.
And then, ideally, get off the screen. Print the tutoring script or annotated reading, listen to the podcast while driving or doing the dishes, discuss the skill with your child or students, practice it, teach it, or apply it in real life. I would rather you spend your time building the skill than talking to the AI about building it.
Academic Integrity and AI Dependence

Any general-purpose AI can be misused to complete schoolwork. I designed SkillsTeacher.AI around a different purpose: identify what the assignment requires, uncover the underlying and prerequisite skills, and help the student learn those skills so they can do the work themselves.
If you upload an argument assignment, for example, the useful question is not “Write this for me.” It is “What skills do I need to write this myself?” The system can then connect the learner to skills such as developing a claim, selecting evidence, organizing an argument, or explaining evidence. The goal is skill acquisition, not task completion.

Ask the student to explain it. Oral assessment has traditionally been harder to use because it can feel subjective, which is why we developed a very granular framework with more than 800 skills related to explaining concepts and answers. The goal is to make oral explanation more structured, consistent, and useful while we beta test and improve the system.
This matters even more in the age of AI. As I discuss in the book, written products can now be generated quickly and can be very difficult to authenticate with certainty. That makes it increasingly important for schools to use oral explanation, follow-up questioning, discussion, and live demonstration of understanding. A student sitting with a teacher and answering dynamic questions—Why? How do you know? Can you give me an example? What changes if this condition changes?—gives much stronger evidence that the student actually understands the material and can connect it to prior knowledge.
This is also where I think AI can make classrooms more human, not less. If AI handles more of the paperwork, preparation, scaffolding, and routine material creation, teachers can spend more time conferring with students, building relationships, and bringing students over for five-minute conversations that ensure they truly understand. In a world where written work is easier to fake, authentic oral explanation becomes more valuable, not less.

They can if AI is used poorly. Cognitive offloading is exactly what I want to avoid.
I do not want students sitting in long conversations with a chatbot until it gradually does their thinking for them. My preferred workflow is much shorter: bring in the problem → identify the skills → get the learning resources → learn and practice → go do it yourself.
SkillsTeacher.AI should make you less dependent on assistance over time. If you keep returning to AI for the same problem, that is a sign that we should probably stop solving the problem and start explicitly teaching the underlying skill.

Yes. In some ways, I worry about teacher dependence on AI even more than student dependence. AI is powerful enough to make weak planning, shallow instruction, or poor judgment look polished on the surface. A teacher can generate a beautiful lesson plan, worksheet, rubric, or presentation without necessarily understanding the skill being taught or why that material is appropriate.
That is exactly what I do not want SkillsTeacher.AI to encourage. The system is meant to help teachers understand the underlying skills, prerequisites, misconceptions, scaffolds, and assessment logic so AI strengthens professional judgment instead of replacing it. The teacher should still know why this skill matters, why this lesson fits, what the student actually needs, and what to do when the AI is wrong.
AI can make a good teacher more efficient and more precise. It can also make a disengaged teacher look much better than they really are. That is why my rule is the same for adults as it is for students: use AI to build your skill, not to hide the fact that you never developed it.
WISSAM’s Pedagogical Approach

WISSAM stands for Whole-language Instruction Supported by Standards, AI, and Metrics. It is the pedagogical approach I developed through my classroom practice and outlined in my book, AI in the Classroom: A Practical Teacher’s Manual. It is essentially my answer to the question: How should we actually teach when we have access to AI?
I use whole-language in a very specific way: use the whole language to teach. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening should work together rather than being treated as completely separate activities.
A student can talk through an idea before writing it, listen to another explanation before reading, explain a reading orally, discuss evidence with classmates, and then put that thinking into writing. Speaking and listening can actually help us develop and see the thinking that supports stronger reading and writing.
The basic cycle is straightforward: look at real evidence → identify the skills → connect them to standards → teach those skills → practice and discuss them → look at new evidence → adjust what you teach next.
The larger goal is to help students with disabilities stay connected to meaningful, rigorous learning rather than being left behind because the material was not accessible to them. It grew out of my actual classroom practice. I was using student work, assessments, classroom discussion, transcripts, standards, and other evidence to figure out what students needed, then using AI to help me analyze that information, prepare materials, differentiate instruction, and teach specific skills.

A discussion, conference, or oral explanation can be transcribed. That transcript can then be examined for evidence of understanding, reasoning, communication, misconceptions, and skills that may need further development.
This is one reason I am developing the oral-assessment side of SkillsTeacher.AI: conversation should not just be classroom activity—it can also help us understand learning. Dialogue and transcription are already part of the WISSAM method described in the book.

AI can help analyze evidence, organize information, identify possible skills, prepare scaffolds, create materials, and reduce paperwork. That should free the teacher to spend more time doing the things I actually want teachers doing: teaching, discussing, questioning, conferring, listening, observing, and building relationships with students.
